So you always ended up picking too-dark, or too light, too shiny or too red lipstick? With hundreds of shades out there it can be difficult to pick the best one. To make things easy for you, beauty expert Nandini Agarwal from Marvie Ann Beck Academy shares tips that will help you find the perfect colour in a sea of overwhelming options.

Determine your skin tone
To pick a colour that will flatter your features determine your skin tone first. Find out whether your skin tone is cool or warm. You can do it by checking your veins. If it looks blue, you are ‘cool’. If it looks green you are ‘warm’. You are best suited for pinks, berries and purples if you are cool toned. You will look best in shades of orange, brown and coral if you are warm toned. Here are 5 shades of pink lipstick that every girl should try.

Do not test lipstick on your hands or arms
Testing the lipstick on your hands will not give you the best picture of how it looks on your lips. The skin on your lips is thin and is also darker in colour. Instead, test the shade on your lips using a clean tester.

Apply the colours side-by-side to compare the shades
To compare the two colours, apply the two colours side by side on your lips. You do not want to put one shade on the upper lip and the other on the bottom lip because we naturally tend to rub our lips together.

Check the lipstick shade in natural light
The lighting in the store is very different from the lighting in your house. So go near the window and check the colour in natural light. If nothing is available, switch the flashlight on in your phone and check the shade. Here’s how to choose the right lipstick shade for dark lips.
